Teton Digital Black Bear power and data centre campus (Swan Hills)
Proposed
Canada · 1 project · Last reported
Summary
Proposed gas-powered data centre campus on Crown land about 19 km south of Swan Hills, Alberta, in Big Lakes County. Kiwetinohk Energy first proposed the roughly 460 MW Black Bear combined-cycle plant in 2024 and received a federal decision that no impact assessment was needed; Teton Digital has since taken it up as the power source for about 1,500 acres of adjacent data centre land. Teton describes a 466 MW first phase with a path to about 3 GW, compute online as early as 2027 using grid power, and the full plant running in Q3 2028. Alberta's project inventory lists it as proposed.

Power supply
| Type | Description | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas onsite | A natural gas combined-cycle plant of 466 MW in its first phase; Kiwetinohk's 2024 design included CO2 capture with pipeline transport to a storage hub, which Teton's materials do not mention. | Kiwetinohk Energy Corp. (filed with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada); Impact Assessment Agency of Canada; Teton Digital; DeSmog |
| Grid | Teton plans bridge power from the grid from 2027 and has applied to AESO for an interconnection; it puts roughly 1 GW of the long-term pathway on the grid. | Teton Digital; Daily Hive |
Status rests on Daily Hive's September 2026 report that Alberta Major Projects lists the project as proposed, plus Teton's undated project page (read 2026-10-09), which says provincial and federal permits are in hand and an AESO interconnection application was filed in April 2026. DeSmog reported Teton's federal permitting claim without verifying it, raised questions about the developer's background, and reported that the 2024 carbon capture design no longer appears in Teton's materials. Both news outlets describe it as a $1.3 billion project without stating the currency, so no investment figure is recorded.
