Canada · 1 project · Last reported

Summary

Bitdeer is building a 101 MW natural gas power plant and a data centre of about 100 MW of computing capacity on a 19-acre site about 1.5 km from Fox Creek, Alberta, in the Municipal District of Greenview. Bitdeer bought the permitted site, with a 99 MW grid interconnection approval, in an all-cash deal in February 2025 and broke ground in June 2026 on a USD 155 million project. It will start with bitcoin mining while the data centre is designed to also suit AI workloads. Energization slipped from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027 and then to Q4 2027.

Power supply

TypeDescriptionSources
Natural gas onsiteA 101 MW on-site gas plant would power the data centre directly under Alberta's bring-your-own-generation framework; Bitdeer plans to capture and use CO2 from the plant.Calgary.Tech; Bitdeer Technologies Group (press release via BNN Bloomberg); Bitdeer Technologies Group (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing)
GridThe plant keeps an approved 99 MW AESO grid connection, and at peak demand the facility can curtail computing and send power to the grid.Calgary.Tech; Bitdeer Technologies Group (press release via BNN Bloomberg)

Groundbreaking in June 2026 was for the power plant; Bitdeer's August 2026 results said data centre design for both AI and crypto loads was under way and listed the site among pipeline capacity, not online sites. Calgary.Tech's February 2025 report said the site could potentially scale to 1 GW. The release places the site in the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16 but also calls it the Regional Municipality of Greenview.
