Summary
On 21 September 2026 the Smedjebacken municipal council (§ 44, Dnr 2024/00349; protocol adjusted and posted on 23 September) approved the option, share-transfer and lease agreements of 17 August 2026 under which EcoDataCenter (EcoDC) may acquire about 51.6 ha of industrial land, part of the property Västansjö 2:7 in Röbackens industriområde, for the establishment of a data centre, and authorised the land's transfer to the municipal company Röbacken 1 AB. Announced only: no building or environmental permit has been granted (expected in 2027), the option has not been called, and the planned groundworks and road relocation are scheduled future work. evidence

After a process of just over seven years EcoDataCenter is establishing itself in Smedjebacken. Dialogue since 2019 concerned acquiring parts of Röbackens industriområde to build data centres; the company is signing an option agreement with the municipality to buy 52 hectares. Construction is to start as soon as the building permit and environmental permit are in place, expected during 2027, with the first data centre expected to operate in 2029 and 125 to 150 permanent jobs at full build-out. evidence
