TeraWulf Chesapeake Data Campus (Morgantown)

Summary
TeraWulf plan to buy the Morgantown Generating Station on the Potomac River in Charles County, Maryland, from GenOn and redevelop it as a data campus with on-site power. The former coal plant, whose coal boilers retired in 2022, now runs about 210 to 220 MW of oil-fired units. TeraWulf proposes restarting it on natural gas and adding battery storage to support up to 1 GW of data center load on about 250 buildable acres, starting with about 500 MW. FERC approved the sale in July 2026 and TeraWulf contemplates first data center operations in 2030, but Charles County zoning does not yet allow data centers.

Capacity, investment and other figures
| Measure | Value | Scope | As of | Notes | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power capacity | up to 1,000 MW | Planned · Campus · Unspecified | 2026-08-05 | TeraWulf describes expansion to support up to 1 GW of load, and press reports describe 1 GW of gas-fired generation for data centers; the two are not clearly separated. | TeraWulf; TeraWulf; The Baltimore Banner |
| Power capacity | about 500 MW | Planned · Phase · Unspecified · Initial phase | 2026-02-02 | TeraWulf | |
| Power capacity | about 210 MW | Operational · Phase · Onsite generation · Existing oil-fired generation | 2026-08-05 | Existing grid-connected generation at the plant; The Banner puts it at about 220 MW from 1970s-era oil units. This supplies the grid, not a data center. | TeraWulf; TeraWulf; The Baltimore Banner; TeraWulf |
| Land area | about 250 acres | Planned · Campus | 2026-02-02 | Buildable acres included in the acquisition. | TeraWulf |

Power supply
| Type | Description | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas onsite | TeraWulf plans to restart the plant on natural gas to power the data campus. The Banner reports that Maryland's top environmental regulator offered in a December letter to expedite approvals, including pipeline rights-of-way; the governor's office said the letter covered cleanup only. | The Baltimore Banner |
| Battery storage | About 500 MW of battery storage is planned so excess generation can be exported to the grid. | TeraWulf; The Baltimore Banner |
| Grid | The existing plant is grid-connected in the PJM market, and TeraWulf aims for the site to remain a net energy supplier to Maryland. | TeraWulf |
The Q1 2026 release (s4) still listed the acquisition as subject to regulatory approvals including FERC. No source opened confirms that the sale has closed. Data center construction would also need a local zoning path, which Charles County had not provided as of July 2026. TeraWulf's releases describe the site as suited to compute-intensive uses without naming AI. Environmental and consumer groups opposed the sale at FERC over electricity price and grid concerns.
